Fileformer (styled FileFormer) is a free, browser-based file toolkit developed by Kalenux for converting, compressing, editing and transforming files without sign-up or installation.[1] It offers more than 100 specialised tools across images, video, audio, documents, ebooks, archives, fonts and presentations, alongside developer, text, calculator and network utilities.[2] Most tools process files directly in the user’s browser using WebAssembly, so files stay on the device by default.[3]

01Overview

Fileformer is an all-in-one file toolkit built for the way people actually work with files online. Most users do not need one single converter: they need a place where they can convert an image, compress a video, merge a PDF, extract text, generate a QR code, format JSON, resize a picture, or prepare a file for sharing without searching for a different website every time.[1]

The platform brings those workflows together into one browser-based product. It spans file conversion, compression, image tools, PDF utilities, developer tools, text tools, calculators, network tools and more. The experience is the same for every tool: open the tool, choose the file or input, process it, download the result, and move on.[1]

No account is required for the core tools. That makes Fileformer cleaner and more practical than the usual upload-heavy, subscription-driven file-tool experience for students, creators, office workers, developers and freelancers.[1]

02History and motivation

The Fileformer home page was first published on 15 January 2024 and was last modified on 25 April 2026, according to its page metadata.[2] Kalenux built it in response to a file-tool category it describes as fragmented: simple tasks such as converting a file, resizing an image, compressing a video or merging a PDF had come to require installing software, creating an account, fighting pop-ups or visiting several different websites.[1]

Instead of treating every file task as a separate product on a separate site, Fileformer groups the most common digital file workflows: convert, compress, edit, merge, split, format, generate, inspect and transform, into a single platform.[1]

“The goal is not to make file tools more complicated. The goal is to make them disappear into the workflow.”[1]

03How file processing works

Tools run in the browser by default, using JavaScript, WebAssembly and modern web APIs, so files are processed on the user’s device rather than uploaded.[3] A few formats offer optional server processing; files processed this way are deleted immediately after conversion.[2]

04OptionalServer for a few formats · deleted after conversion

Because processing happens locally, processing time varies with file size, format, output settings and the performance of the user’s browser or device. Practical limits: for example on large PDFs: depend on available browser and device memory.[2]

04Supported formats

Converters are grouped by file family. Output quality and speed depend on the source file, the chosen settings and the workflow.[2]
